Main

Knitting for the needy is a program in which volunteers get together in nursing homes, retirement villages and community groups to knit warm scarves, blankets, beanies etc for Australia’s homeless  and disadvantaged.

Our Goal is to create enough warm clothing and blankets to keep every one of the homeless & disadvantaged Australians warm each winter whilst simultaneously adding meaning and quality to the lives of our elderly.

The Idea Is Simple – Each Knitting for the needy volunteer chooses a local nursing home/retirement village and spends a bit of quality time each week (1-2 hours) with their new friend or friends doing some knitting and just having a chat. At the beginning of each winter they then give away the knitting to some needy folks and feel a great sense of pride and purpose!

The Benefits are Many

The wonderful thing about knitting for the needy is that it’s a very simple idea and very easy to do but has a range of benefits.

1. Your reconnecting with your elders and doing your part to end elderly social isolation. People in nursing homes especially are often bored, lonely and too often depressed. You can give so much joy to them by just spending a bit of time each week with them and being a friend.

2. You can give our elderly knitters a sense of purpose and meaning to their lives again. They are now able to contribute something of value and get the ‘helpers high’ from doing volunteer work with you instead of feeling discarded and useless.

3. Your providing a valuable service for the homeless/disadvantaged Aussie community by giving them knitted goods (as well as a loving gesture) to keep them warm throughout winter.

4. Your making yourself happier! Research shows that people who volunteer are much happier than those who do not. Studies have shown that volunteering is one of the most effective cures for depression!

We would love more volunteer knitters to Get Involved! Would you like to have the ‘Knitting for the Needy’ program in your Nursing Home, Retirement Village or Community group? Find out the full details here.
