Knitting for the needy is a program in which volunteers come together in nursing homes, retirement villages and community groups to knit warm scarves, blankets, beanies etc for the homeless and disadvantaged. It is a simple idea but a powerful one because as a volunteer you achieve multiple community services with one simple act.

Our goals are threefold. Firstly to reconnect the community with our elders using knitting as a medium. To honour them, to listen to them, to share our lives with them and to do our part to end elderly social isolation. Secondly, to provide a valuable community service by donating our handmade warm clothing and blankets to the homeless & disadvantaged.

Thirdly, to add meaning and a sense of purpose to the lives of our elders again. Instead of feeling discarded and bored, as people in nursing homes often do, they can now contribute again and can get the ‘helpers high’
